DENVER - With more people turning to text messaging as a way to communicate, Metro Denver Crime Stoppers is rolling out a new system that accepts tips via texting.
The nonprofit organization currently works with more than 20 Denver metro law enforcement agencies to help solve crimes in our area through tips from the community.
The way the systems works is: anyone can send an anonymous tip about a crime to Crime Stoppers, through e-mail, the phone, and now text messaging.
Crime Stoppers reviews the tips and forwards them on to the appropriate investigating agency.
David Belue, coordinator for Metro Denver Crime Stoppers, says text messaging will now allow them to reach everyone.
"You look where we are in today's society everybody is texting, the number of people that text is tremendous, and this is going to be a huge step for us," Belue said.
To email Metro Denver Crime Stoppers visit: http://www.metro-denvercrimestoppers.com/ or www.tipsubmit.com.
To call in a tip: 720-913-STOP (7867)
To text a tip: Text "DMCS plus your message," to CRIMES 274637 on your cell phone.
Upon receiving your incoming message, the system will auto reply with a confirmation containing your unique Tip ID.
To submit a follow up, simply reply to the message.
Texting can be terminated by simply texting STOP into the system at any time or by selecting "Terminate Thread" within the application.
All tips are anonymous; however, law enforcement may follow-up with questions.
Successful tips are rewarded through Crime Stoppers up to $2,000.
