That is where University of Northern Colorado reading Professor Michael Opitz comes in.

Opitz recently published a book that provides elementary teachers with fitness and exercise lessons for first through sixth graders. Opitz wrote the book with former UNC doctoral candidate Jennifer Davis-Duerr.

The book blends the concepts of literacy, guided reading, reading aloud and independent reading with instruction on physical and nutritional fitness.

Opitz has written a couple of children's-literature development books including "Don't Speed! Read! 12 Steps for Smart and Sensible Fluency Instruction" and "Listen Hear! 25 Ways to Enhance Listening Comprehension."

Listen to his interview above to see what he has to say about his research.
