Lisa Stone was working at Just Pets in Lone Tree at Maximus Drive and Yosemite Street on Monday night when the theft happened just after 5 p.m.
Stone says a woman had come into the store earlier in the day to look at a 9-week-old pug. She came back later and said she wanted to take the dog home.
As Stone started the paperwork, another customer came in and asked a question about another pet.
While Stone was distracted, the woman ran out of the store with the pug.
The pug cost $1,200.
Stone says detectives returned the pug to the store just after 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday. She says the pug was hungry, tired and a little overwhelmed, but is healthy overall. She is taking the puppy to the vet in the morning for a check-up.
Police told Stone they have several suspects in the case and that the dog had changed hands multiple times since it was stolen from the store.
Stone says the pug will stay with the shop's owner on Tuesday night.
