Sandy Dahl, the wife of Jason Dahl, was found dead Friday morning.
Capt. Jason Dahl was the captain of United Airlines Flight 93 when it crashed in Shanksville, Penn. on Sept. 11, 2001.
Sandy Dahl, a former flight attendant with United Airlines watched the events of that day play out on television.
After that tragic day she devoted her life to provide financial assistance for young pilots. She also worked on tributes and memorials for 9/11 victims, and raised her children.
She founded the Captain Jason Dahl Scholarship fund that is awarded annually to college students majoring in aviation. As of 2011, 16 students have been awarded scholarships. Some have already become commercial pilots.
Her death is a shock to those who knew her.
"Both of them were my best friends," Capt. David Dosch, president of the Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund said. "Unfortunately, both of them had a short period of time to enjoy their company."
The Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund's website issued the following statement Friday evening:
"It is with a deep sense of sadness that the Captain Jason M. Dahl Scholarship Fund announces the passing of Jason's widow Sandra Dahl. Sandy passed away in her sleep this morning from natural causes near Denver Colorado. Sandy was instrumental in the creation of the Dahl Fund following the tragic events of 9-11, and her guiding light will be missed. The thoughts and prayers of the Dahl Fund go out to Sandy's friends and family at this very difficult time in their life."
