Colorado is often cited as the demographic future of the country. Whoever wins here can claim bragging rights for years to come.

Colorado was long a lock for Republicans. It became competitive in 2008, when Obama won it by nine points.

The state has become more socially liberal as educated coastal transplants have settled here. The growing Hispanic population has also sharply trended Democratic.

But Romney has repeatedly emphasized the sour economy, which is as bad in Colorado as the rest of the nation.

More than 1.7 million Colorado voters have cast ballots, and registered Republicans outperformed Democrats, cheering the Romney campaign.

Democrats are banking on a strong Election Day turnout for Obama.
