The U.S. Department of Education announced the award Tuesday to the Longmont-based district. The Longmont Times-Call reports that the money will be used for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, extended school year programs and early childhood education. Superintendent Don Haddad says the money will also be used for early childhood education, individual instruction and reading support in schools in the Skyline High School feeder system.
The award is separate from a $30-million grant announced last week for Colorado schools.
The awards to 16 districts in 11 states and the District of Columbia are the first made directly to school districts rather than to states.
