"We can look to see who grew the most, who actually dropped behind the most, what schools are doing really well and continue to beat the odds and get their kids to 'proficiency' or 'above proficiency,'" Tim Taylor, president of Colorado Succeeds, said.

Colorado Succeeds is one of 18 community organizations who worked together to create ColoradoSchoolGrades.com. It is a nonprofit endeavor designed to help the public understand state-testing data provided by the Colorado Department of Education. Every public school in the state is assigned a letter grade of "A" through "F" based on that data.

"I think that you're not going to be able to take action or be able to understand what do to or even want to dig in to help those schools unless we're first honest about how those schools are performing," Taylor said.

In 2011 when the website was unveiled, school administrators and state leaders expressed concern and criticism over the assignment of an "F" to struggling schools. They said it was a stigma that adds insult to injury.

"We realize that is somewhat controversial," Taylor said. "But, the parents deserve - parents, students, consumers  everybody deserves - this kind of easy to understand information. So we know: Are the schools going where we want?"
