The families took part in a program called Upstream Impact, which paired them up with upper and middle class volunteers who helped them get back on their feet.

In two year's time, most of the families were able to increase their incomes, reduce their welfare benefits and pay off their payday loans.

Earlier in the week, the families held a holiday dinner where gifts were given to their children.

About 120 people attended the event. It's estimated there are 4,400 families living in poverty in northeast Denver.

Around this time next year, Upstream Impact says the 27 families they have helped will be considered middle class.
