DOWN TO BUSINESS

Opening-week speeches are over, and lawmakers will be getting down to business. Expect a flurry of new bill proposals. Many will be watching to see who proposes expanded background checks for gun purchases, a suggestion made last week by Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper.

LET THE GRILLING BEGIN

Some bills that have already been proposed will meet their first tests in legislative committees. Bills up for hearings this week include a measure to give U.S. Secret Service officers arresting powers in Colorado and a bipartisan effort to extend the life of a panel that makes criminal justice recommendations to the Legislature.

NEW NEIGHBORS

It's been almost five years since lawmakers set aside money for a sprawling new building for the state Supreme Court and attorney general. The new justice center opens Monday, so expect Gov. John Hickenlooper, curious legislators and others to check out the building.

ENTERPRISE ZONES

Auditors and lawmakers meet Tuesday to discuss Colorado's Enterprise Zone program, a tax credit created in 1986 to help economic development in struggling areas, such as places with high unemployment rates, low per capita income or slow population growth. Lawmakers will be briefed on an annual report on the program, which lawmakers are considering modifying.

AURORA THEATER REOPENING

Hickenlooper is attending Thursday's reopening of Aurora's Cinemark theater, the site where a gunman killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Some relatives of the victims have rejected an invitation from Cinemark to attend the reopening.
