The event celebrates many important parts of Colorado's economy including farming and ranching, as well as education.
9NEWS Business Reporter Gregg Moss spoke with a enthusiastic high school student named Kristin Schmidt Monday morning. Kristen is the state's Future Farmers of America president and represents the farm-animal's exhibit - whose goal is to educate the public about agriculture.
"We have all kinds of opportunities for people to learn about agriculture in our ag exhibit. We have everything from the Sugar Beet Grower's Association to the potato growers and egg farmers and all kind of opportunities for people to learn about the many facets of agriculture that we have here in Colorado and all across the United States," Kristin said.
Kristin also discussed the free, behind-the-scenes tour available to attendees.
"This is only the second year that we've done those tours, so we're still new to it. We're getting excited and getting involved in those a little bit more each year, but we take them all over the grounds and kind of give them the behind-the-scenes tour of what stock show is really about from an exhibitor's prospective," Kristin said.
In addition to education, president and CEO of the event, Paul Andrews, says the Stock Show also gives Denver's economy a boost.
"The economic impact has been shown over the past two years to be more than $100 million for the seven-county region. That certainly funds lots of activity here in the local community," Andrews said.
The event has plans to get even larger in the future. Working with the mayor and his staff, Andrews says they plan on expanding the venue.
"We're looking at how we can do it right here on site, and we're going to be in the city and county of Denver for another hundred years - we assure you of that," Andrews said.
The National Western Stock Show runs through Jan. 27 with everything from a llama show and wood-carving demonstrations to the more traditional rodeo events. Parking is free including overflow parking at Dick's Sporting Goods Park near Interstate 70 and Quebec Boulevard on specified dates.
