Now, the N-F-L and the players association are finalizing a deal to fund a $100-million Harvard study to "diagnose, treat and prevent injuries and illnesses" in players, according to a proposal obtained by CNN.
Doctors say what distinguishes this study is that it will look at the "whole player across his whole life, not just the brain."
The NFL said it looked forward to learning more about the study and hopes "it will play an important role in advancing medical science."
