GREELEY - One of the victims from Wednesday's deadly shooting in Phoenix is from Greeley. Mark Hummels moved to Phoenix years ago when he took a job with a law firm.

On Thursday, Hummels' colleagues said he would not survive his injuries.
"He was somebody who you wanted to be like because of his empathy for people," childhood friend Colin Shaha said.

Shaha is a teacher at Greeley West High School. He and Hummels grew up together and became good friends.

The two lost touch about eight years ago, but always considered each other great pals.

Shaha says Hummels went on to become a newspaper reporter in New Mexico before going to law school.

The two were on the swim team at Brentwood Middle School in Greeley. Shaha says Hummels was a much better swimmer than he was.

"He was a brilliant athlete," Shaha said.

Some of Hummels family still lives in Colorado, including his father.

"The world lost a beautiful man," Shaha said.

The suspected gunman was found dead in a suburb northeast of Phoenix Thursday morning. According to police, Arthur Harmon, 70, shot and killed a company CEO and injured two others, including Hummels.
