AURORA - Police are investigating a crash near Dalton Elementary School Friday morning.

At 7:34 a.m., a car hit a fence, kept going and hit a flagpole by the school located on 17401 E. Dartmouth.

A mother and child had to get out of the path of the moving vehicle but were not injured. A passerby who happens to be a security guard at Medical Center of Aurora used the end of a knife to break a window in order to get into the car and turn it off, according to Frank Fania with the Aurora Police Department.

The security guard, Carl Anderson, also had to detain the driver, who tried to run from the crash.

The driver has been identified as 37-year-old Sean Berkey. He was hospitalized and faces charges including driving under the influence, driving with a revoked license, hit-and-run and careless driving.

If he's charged with DUI it will be his third since 2005.
