DENVER (AP) - Democrats who control the Colorado Legislature are considering repealing the death penalty with a bill that would launch one of the most emotional debates of this year's session.

Democrats have been counting votes behind the scenes and say they have enough votes to pass the measure when it's introduced soon. But an emotional voice of opposition comes from their own party - Aurora Rep. Rhonda Fields. Two of the three men on death row are there because they were convicted of killing Fields' son and his fiancee in 2005.

Fields also represents a district where emotions over the debate are running high in the aftermath of the movie theater shooting rampage.

Death-penalty opponents say it's handed down unfairly and doesn't deter crime. Supporters say some crimes merit the harshest punishment.
