KUSA - Officials with the Colorado Bureau of Investigations confirmed to 9NEWS a dramatic decrease in the backlog for background checks on gun sales.

Wait times dropped below two days on Thursday. Gun retailers say they had been more than nine days earlier this week.

CBI spokesperson Susan Medina says the bureau reassigned staffers into the InstaCheck Unit which performs the background checks.

Medina stressed the reassignments were temporary. The staffers will eventually be needed again for their normal duties.

Amid controversy over gun policy, gun sales have skyrocketed in Colorado, which overloaded the office that performs the background checks. .

The news may factor into a debate expected on Friday in the Colorado Legislature over how to pay for background checks.
