COLORADO SPRINGS - The man who said he saw someone throw 4-month-old puppy out of a moving vehicle in Colorado Springs Friday morning is now the primary suspect in the case, according to a news release from the Humane Society of the Pike's Peak Region.
The witness brought the puppy to the humane society, where it later died in emergency surgery.
The suspect initially told investigators that he saw the puppy get tossed out of an SUV, but in response to further questioning by law enforcement officials, the news release says, the suspect conceded that he made the story up.
Officers are still trying to piece together what caused the severe internal injuries and trauma that resulted in the puppy's death. A necropsy will be performed at Colorado State University later this week, and they hope this will shed further light on the case.
