LONGMONT - Howe Mortuary & Cremation Services was destroyed by a fire that broke out early Tuesday morning.
Firefighters said when they first arrived on the scene around 1:30 a.m., there was a small fire in the northwest corner of the building, but several small explosions led to the entire building becoming engulfed in flames.
At that point, the Fredrick-Firestone Fire Protection District was called in to assist the five fire engines from the Longmont Fire Department.
Firefighters say six bodies were in the mortuary when the fire broke out. Firefighters removed one of the bodies, which was in a casket, from the building. The body was prepared for a funeral on Tuesday.
The six other bodies were later removed and taken to area mortuaries.
There was still heavy smoke in the downtown area Tuesday afternoon, as firefighters continued to put out hot spots.
Police officers are in the area were blocking off areas to protect water hoses, but dispatchers said there weren't any official street closures.
There were no injuries.
Fire investigators are on scene working to determine the cause of the fire.
