DENVER - The story of Gabriel Trujillo is a tough one to hear. His case prompted our Failed to Death investigation into the state's child welfare system.
In 2013, Gabriel died of a severe head injury. On Wednesday, the prosecutor in the case began his opening statements by saying "it shouldn't hurt to be a child, but it hurt to be Gabriel Trujillo.
Gabriel's grandmother Doris Trujillo is on trial. Investigators say she would repeatedly beat Gabriel and put him out into the cold night naked as punishment.
Her defense attorneys say she is not guilty, claiming scientific evidence will show Gabriel died of a head injury, but that it was not abuse.
Already on Wednesday, the court heard from the paramedics who describe seeing him naked, unconscious, very thin and with a cold temperature. There was also a video played in court showing paramedics trying to stabilize Gabriel in the ambulance - no doubt difficult evidence for the jury to view.
This trial is slated for the next two weeks.
