FORT COLLINS - A teenage driver is facing charges Tuesday morning after she got distracted by her hot tea while turning a corner and rammed a bus bench with two people seated on it, police said.

The crash happened shortly after 7 a.m. at the corner of Shields and Stuart streets in Fort Collins. The impact of the crash sent a 19-year-old man tumbling into the street where he lay for several minutes before being picked up by paramedics and firefighters.

Authorities said he appeared to have been stunned by the crash but was not seriously injured.

According to police, the woman was turning south onto Shields from Stuart when her hot tea spilled, distracting her. She then hit the gas instead of the brakes, over-turned the wheel, jumped the curb and hit the bus bench with her Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said.

Southbound Shields was closed for about 45 minutes following the crash.
