DENVER (AP) - Gov. Bill Ritter is sparing a program that offers aid to needy and disabled Coloradans, as the state looks for ways to close a $320 million budget shortfall.
The Aid to the Needy and Disabled program was scheduled to be suspended Jan. 1 for a $7.2 million savings. Ritter said Friday that after listening to concerns from aid recipients, he decided to restore the program and look for cuts elsewhere.
The program provides about 6,500 Coloradans with a monthly stipend of about $200 to help cover living expenses as they wait to be enrolled in the federal Supplemental Security Income program.
The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless cheered the decision.
