DENVER (AP) - A state lawmaker says he's working on legislation to regulate the booming medical marijuana industry.

Sen. Chris Romer said Thursday that he plans to meet with medical marijuana patients, dispensary owners and law enforcement officials as he develops the bill.

He stressed that he supports the constitutional amendment voters passed in 2000 allowing the use of marijuana for medical purposes. However, he says he wants to make sure that the marijuana is truly being used for medical reasons and is being grown locally.

This week the Obama administration announced it will not seek to arrest medical marijuana users and suppliers as long as they conform to state laws. Romer says Colorado's law isn't clear and needs clarification to protect patients and dispensaries from prosecution.
