DENVER (AP) - Food scraps, biodegradable cups and sandwich boxes from the Democratic National Convention could someday be used to fertilize lawns and gardens.
Tons of trash generated from DNC cocktail parties and meetings at the Pepsi Center and other venues are being turned into compost.
It's a key part of the Democratic National Convention Committee's plan to limit convention trash to just 15 percent of the waste stream sent to landfills.
The aim is to extend the life of landfills and cut the amount of methane, a greenhouse gas, they produce.
The work is happening at a site about 40 miles northeast of Denver by a company called A1 Organics. It's been composting material for Whole Foods for years.
