FEDERAL HEIGHTS - College students have been known to take some drastic measures to earn an extra buck, but perhaps none of these measures can compare to the sheer sting of a well-executed belly flop.
Ten men and 11 women competed in the 17th Annual Belly Flop Contest at Water World Thursday morning for and $4,500 in scholarship money and prizes.
Winner Joe Diefenbach wore a Speedo and unique shower curtain for his dives.
"It's my lucky shower curtain now," he said. Diefenback, a student at Metropolitan State University of Denver, pocketed $1,000 in scholarship money - and perhaps unquantifiable bragging rights -- for his dives.
"They all hurt, but the one that hurt was worst was the one that didn't count," he said. "They had me do and exhibition one. And that one stung quite a bit."
Competitors were judged on their showmanship, style and the loud "smack" that accompanied a successful flop.
"The prizes are incredible," Diefenbach said. "I've been trying to pay for school all the way through and I've had to take out minimal loans, so being able to throw $1,000 towards my last semester of school is going to take a load off my shoulders."
