The Assistant Majority Leader in the State House was elected Speaker of the House Thursday. Carroll is the first African-American elected to this position in Colorado history.

Carroll, who took office in 2004, offered the following comment after Obama's Election Day win.

"I never thought in my lifetime we would see an African American president. The only thing I could think of was not only Barack Obama, but his grandmother. I think of my own mother who passed away who was a sharecropper's daughter, and grew up on the same plantation that my family worked on as slaves. She would be amazed and just overwhelmed with emotion," said Carroll.
