In addition to coordinating DUI checkpoints and patrols with 63 law enforcement agencies across the state, all 743 uniformed state troopers will be on the street this Memorial Day weekend in support of the Heat Is On campaign.
This year, CSP has set its sights high, hoping the unprecedented level of statewide DUI enforcement will keep drunk drivers off the streets. The goal is to have zero alcohol-related deaths Memorial Day weekend.
"Our hope and our expectation is that motorists choose the responsible course and they steer away from getting behind the wheel to begin with after they've chose to have a few drinks... We're happy to bring them by the jail, but we'd much rather have them find another way through a sober friend, a taxi or a bus," said Colonel James Wolfinbarger, the chief of the Colorado State Patrol.
CSP is planning to keep the pressure on drunk drivers all summer long. Troopers and police across the state are planning more checkpoints and patrols during the 100 Days of Heat campaign, which will last through Labor Day.
