The University of Colorado and Colorado State University agreed to play the next 10 Rocky Mountain Showdown football games at Invesco Field, home of the Denver Broncos, beginning in 2010.
"This is the state's signature college football event and the game belongs in Denver," CSU Athletic Director Paul Kowalczyk stated in a news release on Monday.
Kowalczyk and CU Athletic Director Mike Bohn made the announcement just days before the 2009 version of the matchup, which will be held in Boulder's Folsom Field on Sept. 6.
"The players thoroughly enjoy playing in one of the finest NFL stadiums and the atmosphere is like opening your season in a bowl game," Bohn stated.
CU cited a desire to have six home games as its reasoning for moving the game from Invesco to Folsom this year. They say it satisfied wishes from season ticket holders, sponsors and will bring business to Boulder.
The schools say eight of the next 10 contests will take place on college football's opening weekend. CU had previously scheduled two opening weekend matchups in Hawaii over the next decade.
"The economic benefits of playing the game in Denver cannot be understated," Kowalczyk stated. "If we expect to compete on the national stage and continue to grow our programs, it will take the kind of revenue this game generates."
CSU will have the option of hosting the 2020 game in Hughes Stadium, or negotiating a continuation of the game at Invesco.
"This is more than a football game," Kowalczyk said. "It's annually our institution's single greatest outreach to the Denver market."
CSU says there are more than 43,000 Rams alumni in the Denver metro area.
According to CU, the Rocky Mountain Showdown is the only neutral-site college football game to which the fan base from both schools can travel in less than an hour.
