The U.S. Forest Service says someone dumped the tires in the Pawnee National Grassland, and discarded another 600 tires on nearby private land, northeast of Greeley.
Officials are concerned because of the cost to taxpayers to clean up the mess. They are asking the public to call Law Enforcement Officer Terry Baxter at 970-295-6719 with any information about the recent crime or suspicious activity.
Dumping trash on federal land carries a $500 fine, plus the cost to remove the waste. Illegal dumping could also carry other charges such as driving off-road or on closed roads.
