Building 'BRIDGES' to the special needs community

It is not a selfish thing; instead Molly's legacy is all about changing the lives of others through meaningful relationships. Oddly enough, it all started while she was organizing something that, in retrospect, seems a bit superficial: homecoming court.

"I was sitting at a table working on nominations, and a kid with special needs walked by. I called him and said, 'Hey, do you want to nominate someone?'" said Molly, one of the 2010 9Kids Who Care. "They were so excited to get a chance to nominate someone for homecoming royalty, I wanted to do more."

Molly created BRIDGES (Building Relationships in Different Groups), which integrates mainstreamed students with special needs students at Legacy High School.

"I love them so much. It cheers me up and puts me in a good mood every Tuesday morning. Everyone leaves in a good mood on Tuesdays," Molly said.

Molly also created the Legacy Royalty Guard, which highlights special education students during homecoming week. Involving special needs students has turned homecoming into something more than just a dance; students who might have felt left out now receive huge cheers from the entire student body as they participate in the ceremony.

"Everyone's the same, there shouldn't be that gap in between the two groups," Molly said. "I think we can learn a lot from each other. Everyone! I think having that gap bridged is really important."

Molly also built bridges of education for villages in Kenya, Africa. When she traveled to Kenya in June, she delivered more than 5,000 books gathered during book drives she organized at her school.

"It definitely make you grateful for what you have here and for the education I have the opportunity to get here," Molly said. "It's inspired me to do more. I can't wait to go back next summer and help out even more."
