Larry Bell, director of International Studies at CU Boulder, says the student, who was to begin classes in Valparaiso on Monday, had arrived early to spend time with family. She was reportedly en route from Santiago to Valparaiso when the earthquake hit.
There are five CU students studying in Chile. Three in Valparaiso, and two in Santiago. All five are now accounted for.
CU also has faculty and graduate students in northern Chile in the Atacama region. They are working in an astronomical observatory near San Pedro de Atacama. It is not clear exactly how many are there because they frequently travel back and forth. CU is working to determine if they are safe.
