The Larimer County Sheriff's Office says Richard Heene wanted to make sure it was his balloon and asked sheriff's office staff to lay out the balloon so he could measure it.
Sheriff's officials say on Oct. 15, 2009, the Heenes reported that their son Falcon had floated away in a UFO-shaped helium balloon. Instead, the boy appeared at his home later that afternoon.
The pair pleaded guilty to perpetrating the hoax on Nov. 13 and were handed short jail sentences.
Richard Heene pleaded guilty to falsely influencing authorities and his wife pleaded guilty to filing a false report.
They were allowed to serve their sentences separately so one of them could care for their three sons.
