In April, police arrested three people in connection to those deaths: Terrence Andre McNeal, Janelle Kimberly Harris, 20, and Tiera Lachae Homes.
"Since the arrests of McNeal, Harris and Homes, new information has surfaced in the homicide investigation involving George and Durst," Friel told 9NEWS.
Friel could not say what the police are searching for in the area.
The search area is several football fields long. Several bloodhound teams from Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, Wheat Ridge Fire and the Elbert County Sheriff's Department are assisting in this search.
The search area is also near a bike path, but police say the path is still open despite their search.
Investigators are asking people to avoid the field police are searching, however.
In November, Aurora Police found George's body in his apartment on Kepner Place. George's girlfriend Durst was considered missing at that time.
In January, investigators found the car belonging to Durst. But did not locate her.
In April, police found Durst's body in the Cherry Creek spillway.
Each of the three defendants are being held without bond on two counts of first-degree murder.
Their mug shots have not been released because police say this is still an active investigation.
