The Colorado Department of Corrections says two female officers were attacked in the kitchen at the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility on Monday morning during breakfast preparation. One died of her injuries; the other remains at Pueblo's Parkview Hospital with serious injuries.

The surviving corrections officer has been identified as Sergeant Lori Gann. She has worked at the facility for more than three years.

Alison Morgan, spokesperson for DOC, would not comment on who was involved in the morning assault and would not say if one or more prisoners were involved.

Arkansas Valley, as well as most of DOC's facilities, remain under lockdown while the investigation continues. Arkansas Valley houses mostly medium-security inmates and currently has 999 inmates.

"This is a sad day for the DOC family," Morgan said during an afternoon press conference in Pueblo. "We are hurting."

Morgan said DOC does use inmate workers in its kitchen at Arkansas Valley, but would not say if the attacker was working in the kitchen staff.

The kitchen turned into a crime scene immediately and remains closed while state investigators try to figure out precisely what happened. Other DOC facilities are providing food service for the time being.

Governor John Hickenlooper toured the facility Monday afternoon and was expected to visit with the family of the injured officer later in the evening.

"We are deeply saddened by the death this morning of a staff member at the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility," read a statement from the Governor's office. "Our condolences go to the family and her coworkers. Our hearts and prayers are also with the staff member who was injured and remains hospitalized."

It was back in 2002, when Eric Autobee was killed by a prisoner while working in the kitchen of the Limon Correctional Facility.
