James Scott Whitler, 45, was arrested at his home off the 4900 block of Glade Road, west of Loveland, about 8:30 p.m. He is accused of killing a process server who has not yet been publicly identified.
Deputies said the process server may have been beaten and stabbed to death. A manner and cause of death, along with the man's identity, will eventually be released by the Larimer County Coroner's Office.
Sheriff Jim Alderden says the scene was "very bloody."
"There's a lot of blood and they're not exactly sure what the cause of death is," he said.
"Apparently what happened, you have a divorce situation where the lady showed up to have her husband served with divorce papers and a restraining order with a private process server," Alderden added.
Court records show Lisa Whitler filed for divorce from James S. Whitler Wednesday. She was also granted a temporary restraining order against her husband at a 4 p.m. hearing. The restraining order was based on allegations of domestic abuse, court records indicate.
Larimer County sheriff's deputies said the two children were in the home at the time of the incident. They were taken to Medical Center of the Rockies, but deputies did not disclose their conditions or why they were taken there.
According to a sheriff's news release, Lisa Whitler was present at the home during the incident but declined medical treatment. She was taken to the sheriff's office late Wednesday evening to give a statement.
Alderden says Whitler will face charges of first-degree murder.
