A new review of research from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine confirms that using a helmet when skiing and snowboarding decreases the risk and severity of head injuries.

Doctors say some ski enthusiasts complain that wearing a helmet reduces visibility and may create a false sense of security, promoting dangerous behavior.

But their review of 16 published studies on helmet use finds most severe head injuries sustained on the slope happened when skiers were not wearing helmets.
