The basin is among sites the Environmental Protection Agency plans to review for potential effects of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, on drinking water. Fracking is a process that blasts sand, water and chemicals underground to release natural gas.
Landowner Tracy Dahl of Las Animas County had pushed for the EPA to include the area in its study. He filed a complaint last year contending fracking contaminated his drinking water, but state regulators concluded he couldn't prove work at a coal-bed methane well near his property caused the problems.
