Colorado photographer John Fielder joined us on the 9NEWS morning show and he says that peak colors in Colorado are usually weeks 3 and 4 in September, except the Telluride area, which is first week of October.
For a quick day trip, take the Peak to Peak Highway North from Nederland, and Highway 7 from Lyons to Estes Park. Both drives will have nice colors starting this weekend. The peak time for this route will be the third week of September.
For overnighters who want massive color as far as eye can see, there are several great options. In Steamboat Springs, Elk River Road to Steamboat Lake State Park and North to Little Snake River is gorgeous, according to Fielder. In Aspen, Maroon Creek, Castle Creek, and Snowmass Creek Roads are best.
In Crested Butte, Kebler and Ohio Passes have the biggest aspen forests in the state. In Telluride, there are big mountains with aspen, oak, and cottonwood in foreground.
