Her performance as Alex Forrest earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
"The character in Fatal Attraction, people say she was nuts; she was evil," Close said. "When I did my research at the time, which I find astounding no mental disorder came up, I had huge empathy for her because she was somebody in great need. She was out of control."
Years after creating that role, Close's sister was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Her nephew lives with schizo-affective disorder. Jessie Close asked her sister to do something to help in the efforts to educate others about mental illness.
Bring Change 2 Mind is an organization that works to eradicate the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness. Tuesday, the Close sisters spoke at a benefit luncheon for the University of Colorado Depression Center.
Beyond eliminating the stigma of mental illness, Jessie and Glenn Close hope to bring together families and encourage them to talk about the issues. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about one in four adults in the United States has a diagnosable mental disorder.
