A study of over 2,000 colon cancer patients found those who spent six or more hours a day sitting were 36-percent more likely to die than those who sat less than three hours a day. Those that exercised had even more of a benefit since researchers also found out that regular exercise lowered the risk of dying from colon cancer by 28-percent.

Researchers still aren't sure why sitting contributes to an increase risk of dying from colon cancer. But they do say that prior research has shown that long periods of sitting can have negative effects on a body's glucose and insulin levels and can worsen hormone balances. These effects can take their toll on a body trying to recover from something like colon cancer. Other research has also shown that sitting can also be linked to a higher chance of getting colon cancer and breast cancer. A recent study, looking at over one hundred thousand people, found that the more time they spent sitting they higher risk they had of not only developing different types of cancer but also of dying earlier in general.

So your best bet is to get up and go for a walk. Even a 30 minute walk during the day can help decrease your chances of both developing cancers and dying early.

Although this study looked at sitting and colon cancer experts believe the results could be the same for other cancers as well.
