GOLDEN - A man who defrauded dozens of customers around the country is headed to prison for the next 15 years.

Brent Widdifield, 42, was sentenced in Jefferson County District Court this week on two felony theft charges and another count of violating bail.

The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office says Widdifield used his once-legitimate business to swindle $300,000 from customers in 22 states.

Through his company named Action Steel Buildings, which advertised online and in newspapers, Widdifield promised customers steel building kits, but never delivered the product after receiving payment through wire transfers.

Investigators say Widdifield spent the money he scammed from customers at casinos.

At his sentencing, District Judge Phil McNulty called the case aggravated because Widdifield targeted military families by pitching a 5 percent discount, according to the DA's office.
