DENVER - A 22-year-old man who pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide for fleeing from a fatal crash last February was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay more than $14,000 in restitution.
Jesus Armenta was driving at high speeds on southbound Federal Boulevard when he collided with a Dodge Neon near Alameda Avenue, according to authorities. The collision caused the Neon to cross into the northbound lanes of Federal Boulevard, where it was struck by an incoming van.
The driver of the Neon, 80-year-old Maximinio Gallegos, was seriously injured. His 74-year-old wife, Carmelita Gallegos, later died from her injuries. The couple was driving home from an evening of bingo.
The couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in August of 2012.
Armenta fled the scene but was later found and taken into custody. He faces deportation once his prison sentence has been served.
