SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - Matthew McConaughey has won the supporting-actor prize at the Spirit Awards honoring independent film for his role as a flamboyant stripper in the hit flick "Magic Mike."

McConaughey joked at Saturday's ceremony that he "had to take (his) pants off to win a trophy."

Austrian writer-director Michael Haneke's old-age love story "Amour" won for best international film. The 70-year-old Haneke quipped that he felt he was the oldest man in a room filled with young filmmakers.

Among other early winners were the teen drama "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" as best first film, from director Stephen Chbosky, who adapted the picture from his novel.

Derek Connolly also won for first screenplay for "Safety Not Guaranteed," a romantic comedy with a time-travel spin.
