KUSA - I-70 reopened after a pileup on Interstate 70 closed traffic eastbound near Lookout Mountain for several hours Sunday.
"It started with one minor accident east bound I-70 around lookout mountain exit. After about the third or fourth accident we had to close the highway down, all the east bound traffic on I-70," Jefferson County Deputy Chris Caro said.
Colorado State Patrol says one of the accidents involved 12 vehicles. Only minor injuries were reported.
As a result of the pileup, traffic also was slowing in the westbound lane of I-70.
Drivers waited for hours while crews worked to tow cars and clear the scene. Many people say they were returning home from a weekend in the mountains.
"This is the big call of the day," Caro said. "Everybody's been cooperative though, it has worked out pretty well considering."
Interstate 70 reopened at around 12 p.m. on Sunday. CDOT expects the roads to become busy again in the afternoon once people start leaving the high country. They're encouraging drivers to take things slow and watch out for icy roadways.
