EL PASO COUNTY - One southern Colorado sheriff is taking on Colorado's new gun bills.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa got a standing ovation from an angry crowd after he said he'd stand firm against Democrat-sponsored gun bills.

This all came Thursday night during a two-hour meeting in downtown Colorado Springs. Maketa is taking a stand against those bills that are expected to become law July 1. Maketa says the proposed laws were hastily crafted and at least one would be unenforceable.

"The president doesn't have the authority to direct local law enforcement nor does Congress have the authority force local law enforcement to act as their agents," Maketa said.

Maketa says he would have to enforce bills signed into law. However, he said he would willfully ignore the ban on high-capacity magazines. Maketa says he's looking into the possibility of suing to overturn the bills if they become law.
