KUSA - In some states, the program that funds meals that are delivered to homebound seniors is going through painful cuts. It's already impacting seniors in other states.

Colorado will not see the effects until July 1.

Volunteers of America distributes thousands of meals for the program in the Denver area. The director of nutrition for VOA says it's food they can't afford to lose, especially with the number of people who need the service growing.

"We're expecting 25 to 30 percent increases by 2020 ... so we're saying we're seeing a large amount of senior growth in our state," Dale Elliott with VOA said. "So, [it's] very concerning."

Governor John Hickenlooper has allocated $2 million more to programs for seniors in Colorado, and some of the cuts will be offset with that.

Elliott says if you do not want more cuts for Meals on Wheels, you need to call or write your lawmakers.
