USA TODAY - Country singer Jo Dee Messina joins the ranks of artists using Kickstarter to raise money for recording projects.

Messina, 42, posted her "My Time Our Music" project to the crowdfunding website Friday and hopes to raise $100,000 to cover the cost of hiring musicians and recording this album.

"I want to give the public a chance to be heard," Messina writes on her Kickstarter page. "This time I want to make a record WITH you, in addition to making one FOR you."

Messina previously recorded for Curb Records and released six No. 1 hits between 1998 and 2005, including Bye-Bye, I'm Alright and My Give a Damn's Busted. Now a free agent, she has been using social media to preview new songs and solicit fans' opinions.

"I have a lot of interaction on Facebook and Twitter with the fans directly," she says. "They're making the record, they're funding the record, they're going to help select the artwork for the record."

Messina has begun recording already and has a single ready to release next month. If she meets her fund-raising goal, she plans to put out the album in September.

Within the first few hours, Messina had more than 40 backers promising nearly $3,000. She hopes to promote the project with upcoming TV appearances.

She's also offering some unique incentives for backers at the top pledges, including joining them for a three-mile run before one of her shows and writing and recording a personalized lullaby for their children.

"When I was a kid, my mom used to get these books that had my name in it," she says. "I thought it'd be cool to have a little lullaby with your kid's name in it."
