KUSA - Every year, on the first Wednesday in June, runners unite and celebrate something 49 million people do in the United States: run.

If you log your miles for National Running Day, plug them into and check out how Colorado fares against the rest of the nation.

To coincide with National Running Day, Competitor is offering discounts on local and national races (if you sign up on Wednesday). Go to for details.

Want to strap on your sneakers and get out?  There are two free Fun Runs Wednesday night - both of which are at 6 p.m. One is in Denver at the Runner's Roost on Colorado Boulevard and the other at the Boulder Running Company on Pearl Street in Boulder.

If you do get out and run on Wednesday and you are a little sore afterwards, there's a food many do not think about that can help with recovery.

Researchers are finding tart cherries have the highest anti-inflammatory content of any food. According to studies, people who drank dark cherry juice while training for long-distance running reported significantly less pain after exercise than those who didn't.

New studies have also found tart cherries added to a diet may increase bone density and improve sleep. These benefits are found in dried, frozen, juice and concentrate forms.  For more details about the new studies on cherries, visit
