CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A Charlotte, North Carolina toddler is experiencing a whole different world after a one-of-a-kind surgery.

Grayson Clamp was born deaf, but one procedure allowed him to hear his father's voice for the first time.

Grayson's parents took him to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill for an auditory brainstem implant. Unlike cochlear implants which go on the hearing nerve, this one goes directly on the brainstem.

Grayson is the first child in the United States to undergo this surgery.

His parents say the journey started well before he was born, when they decided to become foster parents to medically-fragile children.

"We got Grayson took him home from the hospital, and he belonged, he was ours from i think, day one," Len Clamp said.

Grayson got the implant as part of an FDA trial.
