15-year-old Gerard "Gerry" Julien
DENVER - Colorado State Patrol Troopers arrested a 21-year-old Denver man in connection to a hit-and-run that killed a young jogger.
A tip from a family member led investigators to the home of Derrick Fransua where he was arrested Monday for the July 20 crash.
Fransua is accused of hitting and killing 15-year-old Gerard "Gerry" Julien after running a red light near the intersection of South Kipling Parkway and West Asbury Avenue.
Troopers say Fransua, driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser, fled the scene after hitting Julien. CSP says witnesses reported seeing Fransua racing against another vehicle at the time of the crash.
The second vehicle is described as a dark blue Volkswagen Jetta. The Colorado State Patrol still is seeking the driver of the Jetta.
Fransua was booked into the Jefferson County Detentions facility. He's facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving death, vehicular homicide - reckless driving, tampering with physical evidence, engaging in a speed contest, reckless driving and false reporting to authorities.
The suspect's family released the following statement following the arrest:
"We are deeply saddened about the passing of Gerard "Gerry" Julien. Our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers go out to his family. We will continue to cooperate with the authorities as they continue their investigation in the matter."
