KUSA - Families who live in Green Valley Ranch are keeping an eye on each Saturday tonight. Police are warning parents and children to be on alert after a man tried to abduct a 9-year-old girl in that area. Denver police say it happened at around 7 Friday night.
The young girl was walking by a park near Malaya Street and 55th Ave. when a stranger hopped out of a car and approached her.
"He grabbed the young lady around the waist. He made some sort of statement to her but she was able to break free and run," Sgt. Betty Hale with the Denver Police Department said.
Neighbors describe their community as safe and quiet. They say children always go outside to play and usually don't have any fears. What happened Friday night, however, has put many children and parents on guard.
"When situations or circumstances do occur you're never ready for it. I'm shocked and startled. The young girl was 9, but that could have been my son. He is 12. It just goes to show that this can happen to any parent, any child any place, any time," Dawn Russell said.
Parents in the area say they will continue to speak with their children about stranger danger and what to do if they are approached by someone.
Police say the description they have for the suspect is vague, but he has been identified as a black man, thin build, about six-feet tall with a goatee. He was driving a mid-sized car that may be light in color.
