CHAFFEE COUNTY - A benefit was held Sunday in Buena Vista for a well-known family who died in a rockslide on September 30.
Dwayne Johnson, his wife Dawna, their daughter Kiowa and two nephews were killed when boulders the size of vehicles tumbled down onto them. The only survivor was Dwayne and Dawna's other daughter, 13-year-old Gracie Johnson.
According to a family friend who attended Sunday's benefit, Gracie is doing well and has already returned to Buena Vista Middle School.
Gracie was trapped underneath a boulder, but several deputies helped pull her out. One of her legs was mangled.
Allie Bernhardt, who has met with Gracie multiple times since the slide, said all of Gracie's stitches have been removed.
"Gracie is extremely strong and so is Dakota. They both have a very bright future in front of them. I couldn't be more proud of them right now, honestly," Bernhardt said.
Gracie's only other sibling is Dakota. Dakota wasn't there the day of the rockslide, but we are told he's doing as well as he possibly can be.
During Sunday's benefit, music was played, money was raised and memories of the family were shared.
Gracie and Dakota are currently staying with family in Buena Vista. More benefits are planned down the road.
